New Zealand’s first English language school: Languages International is an English language school for adults, located in the heart of Auckland City. Established in 1978, it is New Zealand’s most experienced English school. The school’s premises are two grand historic buildings in Albert Park, across the road from the University of Auckland and a short walk from downtown shopping, entertainment and transport.
A medium-sized school, with 100 to 150 students and a maximum of 14 students per class, Languages International has very high academic standards but a relaxed, friendly feeling thanks to its location and excellent support for students. The school has a spacious and well-resourced Learning Centre, where teacher-guided independent learning complements the students’ classroom-based lessons. Languages International is also a teacher-training provider, logging nearly 200 Cambridge CELTA courses and over 1700 graduates since 1988.

BEGINNER
Building Confidence and Basic Communication
In the early stages of your learning journey at Languages International (Levels 1-2), the focus is on building a strong foundation for communication. Students at this level will learn to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases. You will develop the ability to introduce yourself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people you know, and things you have. By the end of this stage, you can expect to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly. The goal is to move you from listening to actively participating in simple exchanges.
INTERMEDIATE
Fluency, Detail, and Independent Expression
As you progress to the Intermediate stages (Levels 3-5), your command of English expands significantly. You will learn to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Learning outcomes focus on producing simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. You will be able to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. This is a crucial phase where students often transition from general conversation to more academic or professional contexts, such as preparing for the English for Business or English for University pathways.
ADVANCED
Precision, Nuance, and Professional Application
At the Advanced levels (Levels 6-8), you are refining your English for high-level academic and professional success. Students expect to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. You will learn to express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. The curriculum focuses on using language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. You will be able to produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices. This stage prepares you specifically for rigorous exams like Cambridge C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, or for entering the workforce as a highly competent speaker.
Languages International is in the heart of Auckland City, close to downtown shopping, entertainment and transport. The school’s setting is unique: its historic premises are surrounded by the trees and gardens of Albert Park. Just across the road from the school is the University of
Auckland, a convenient place for our students to buy lunch, look through the bookshop or pay for transport passes. Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, with a population of around 1.5 million. It’s a vibrant, cosmopolitan city and an important educational centre, with three universities and many other educational institutions.
It offers an excellent quality of life (ranked 3rd in the world in the 2019 Mercer Quality of Living Survey), with good transport links, plenty of expansive parks and many beaches – Auckland is known as the “City of Sails” because of the large number of boats per capita.
900 metres from the train station
Staying with a carefully selected host family is a warm, secure way to experience everyday New Zealand life while practising English beyond the classroom. Homestay typically includes your own room and meals (dinner + breakfast on weekdays, full board on weekends), and you’ll usually be the only student in the home — or paired with someone from a different language background.
If you prefer more independence, Languages International can point you to central-city student residence options within easy walking distance of the school and Auckland CBD. Residences vary by style and facilities (e.g., co-living or budget hotel-style options), so you can choose the vibe that fits your routine and budget.
