Beginner Stage (General English Levels 1 – 2)
The Beginner stage at Shafston International College covers Levels 1 (Beginner) and 2 (Elementary), designed to build a confident foundation for students with little to no prior English experience. In this stage, the curriculum focuses on "Survival English," teaching essential grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation needed for daily life in Australia. Students engage in practical tasks like introducing themselves, shopping, and using public transport, ensuring they can navigate their new environment comfortably. The supportive atmosphere helps students overcome the initial fear of speaking while establishing the core linguistic building blocks required for further study.
Intermediate Stage (General English Levels 3 – 4)
At the Intermediate stage (Pre-Intermediate to Intermediate), students transition from basic understanding to active, fluent communication. Covering General English Levels 3 and 4, this stage allows students to customize their learning through "Shafston Plus" electives, such as conversation workshops, job readiness training (including barista skills), or grammar clinics. Students learn to express complex opinions, participate in debates, and handle real-world social interactions with ease. This is a critical growth period where learners move beyond textbook English to natural, spontaneous language use, preparing them for professional environments or travel.
Advanced Stage (General English Levels 5 – 6)
The Advanced stage targets students aiming for professional fluency and academic excellence. Spanning Levels 5 (Upper-Intermediate) and 6 (Advanced/Proficiency), this stage emphasizes critical thinking, nuanced expression, and high-level accuracy. Students at this level often prepare for official exams like Cambridge (FCE, CAE, CPE) or IELTS, and have access to direct pathways into Australian universities and colleges. The curriculum shifts focus to academic writing, formal presentations, and complex text analysis, equipping students with the sophisticated language skills necessary for global business or higher education success.
The PEP program specifically targets young learners who wish to learn English and continue their schooling in Australia. It provides a pathway for students with only basic English skills to progress to mainstream primary school upon completion. Alternatively, students may continue into the High School Preparation (HSP) program at Shafston before transitioning to a mainstream high school. The program is designed for students aged 7 to 12 years. PEP students must reside with a “nominated guardian” approved by the Department of Home Affairs.
